£16m Ironmonger Row Baths refurbishment forges ahead
Councillor Ruth Polling and NDC Chief Executive Kirby Swales with a model of Ironmonger Row Baths Islington Council and EC1 New Deal for Communities are delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Ronalds Architects to take forward design proposals for the £16 million refurbishment of the historic Ironmonger Row Baths in EC1. These proposals will be available for public comment in October.
The N1-based consultancy beat some strong competition from a shortlist of six prestigious firms to win the contract.
“Ironmonger Row Baths is a much-loved, listed building so we wanted someone with a proven track record in sympathetic, innovative restorations,” said Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council Executive Member for Equalities and Leisure. “Tim’s practice has transformed Hackney Empire which really impressed us.”
Kirby Swales, Chief Executive of EC1 New Deal, which is contributing £3M to the project said: “The building was a state of the art community facility when it was built in the 1930s so we are delighted that it will be updated to meet 21st century needs’.
The refurbishment will see the pool, Turkish bath and sauna facilities modernised; the interior of the building remodelled with larger exercise and gym areas; more space for community groups, and other environmental and accessibility improvements throughout.
