Growing on Gambier
Ashley Gordon (6) at the allotments planting day at Gambier House, Lever Street, EC1. Residents of the Gambier House estate in EC1 can now grow their own fruit and vegetables on six allotments funded by EC1 New Deal for Communities (NDC).
The new allotment holders learnt about what they could grow at a planting day last Thursday (23 April) led by St Luke’s Centre community gardener Heather Stabler. They planted carrots, peas, onions and herbs.
Allotment holder Dhwani Shah, said:
“I am very pleased to have a small piece of land where I can grow my own vegetables. I’ve never done anything like this before. It’s a nice thing to do as a family as well. My daughter was very excited - she wanted to get out of her buggy and help!”
The allotments were built as part of a £350,000 new outdoor space at the estate on Lever Street, EC1. Funded by EC1 NDC (£300,000) and Islington Council (£53,000).
