History on your doorstep
Head of Library and Cultural Services, Rosemary Doyle Residents needn’t go far to find out about the history of EC1 and Islington now that the Islington Museum on St John Street has opened its doors. The new attraction, which adjoins the Finsbury library, welcomed its first visitors last month.
The museum traces the history of Islington from Medieval times through to modern day and looks at themes including wartime and childhood – drawing on the lives of local people as well as the famous. The first of many planned exhibitions includes a look at the history of Clerkenwell. And for Gunner’s fans, there is Harry Trigg’s fascinating Arsenal collection. The museum, which is free, is open from 10am all week except Wednesdays and Sundays.
The £1.2 million project received £20,000 of funding from EC1 New Deal for Communities. And the expansion of Finsbury library doesn’t stop there. The
community hall which received an investment of £156,000 from EC1 New Deal for Communities is now open and available for hire. For more information, call 020 7527 7960.
