Together for a better London

Together for a better London Volunteers Phil Richardson and Spencer Draper on King Square

On Friday 16 May thousands of office workers got out from behind their PCs and into the fresh air to volunteer for London Better Together Day.

Twenty-five volunteers from the Ministry of Justice came to King Square in EC1 to give the gardens a good spring clean. They got stuck in to adding soil to rose beds, sanding and varnishing benches, pruning and planting new lavender bushes.

EC1 New Deal for Communities helped to organise the day with Islington Council’s parks department, Greenspace.

Spencer Draper, Policy Manager in the Partnership Unit at the Ministry of Justice said:

“This garden is important to the local community and it’s very rewarding for us to help make it a better environment.”

Phil Richardson, Policy Advisor in the same department said:

“It’s good to get out of the office and away from brain work to do something physical. We usually spend our time thinking about policy, but today we’re doing something practical to help people.”

King Square Gardens was just one of over 100 locations around the capital which benefited from businesses volunteering their employees. Over 80 companies signed up to give over 2000 of their staff one day to volunteer and complete invaluable work across London.
