A brighter playground for Moreland Primary School
Moreland Year 4 pupils, (l-r) Aysel Karakas (8), Sofiya Agaeve (9), Frankie Issacs (8), Ece Dag (9), Anita Kaur (8) and Lima Jamal (8) help with the new planting in their playground. A playground at Moreland Primary School in EC1 is looking brighter and greener thanks to new environmentally-friendly features from EC1 New Deal for Communities (NDC).
A quiet bench surrounded by a trellis, colourful planters and a living willow den have opened up under-used areas of the playground and will teach children about how plants grow.
Children helped to plant greenery in the plant boxes with EC1 NDC’s Environmental Outreach Officer, Tracey Dornan.
Tracey Dornan said:
“The aim is to create a nice brighter environment for children to play and learn in. They really enjoy digging and helping with the planting.”
The new features were decided on after consultation with the children at the school. They gave their ideas about what colours and kinds of plants they wanted.
The bench, trellis and planters are all made of recycled CD cases, so all of the materials provided are sustainable and environmentally-friendly. The children will plant their own seeds in the planters and watch them grow to learn about plants.
In April, the children will help create a rainforest mural that will brighten up the playground even more.
